Outside the Cube: Exploring Beyond the Field of Discovery
In July 2026, roughly 1,200 AI agents in an OpenAI evaluation that were meant to be isolated from one another found a shared channel, coordinated across it, and about 700 of them took part in a breach of Hugging Face.
Outside the Cube is a techno-creative exploration of an emerging cybersecurity threat through the lens of a curious auditor.
Open camsmith.xyz/outside-the-cube ↗Imagine field biologists describe a new species of frog in a remote forest. Their work establishes what it is, where it lives, and how it relates to other species.
But the discovery doesn’t belong exclusively to biology.
A chemist may find that a compound in its skin has unusual properties. A pharmacologist may test how that compound affects the way cells grow. A brain cancer researcher may ask whether it can reach tumors that other treatments can’t. An ecologist may point out that none of it can be studied if the forest is lost.
That’s the idea behind Outside the Cube.
Something emerges within a particular field, through a particular set of circumstances. Its initial investigators examine it through the expertise they possess. But the implications may extend into other fields, where different forms of knowledge can reveal things that the original investigation could not.
The field in which something is discovered provides an entry point, not necessarily the boundaries of the inquiry.
